Dealing With Discriminatory Co-Workers

  1. Avoid negative coworkers wherever possible.

One of the most effective ways to deal with negative coworkers is to avoid them as much as possible. If you are not working with them on the project tasks, or if they are not around you, there are fewer chances that they will affect you. 

However, it is not always possible to avoid them since you are employed in the same company or organization, but try to escape from them wherever possible.

  1. Learn to voice your thoughts.

Seek escape from the negative coworker, not the situation. If their presence is causing you trouble or you feel uncomfortable, it is time to address the issue and confront the situation. 

When sharing your feelings on how they make you feel during your work, it is recommended to use “I” language. It helps them get a better understanding of your perspective. For example, you can say, ‘I find your behavior towards me makes me feel uncomfortable’ instead of saying, ‘You have a very rude behavior.’

  1. Try to compromise on group projects.

It is impossible to avoid a co-worker if you have been assigned a group project. However, try to compromise in order to make things run smoothly. They may try to give you a hard time by not listening to you. Keep your cool and do the work assigned to you. 

Stay positive and make them understand the importance of collaboration. It will help maintain productivity and improve problem-solving and team-building skills.

  1. Respond to them professionally.

If a negative coworker causes you trouble or puts you down, stay calm and respond professionally. Stay focused on the topic of discussion. Avoid getting carried away by their poor behavior. 

A good way to respond to a negative coworker if they are mean or speak rudely to you is to ask them to explain what they mean. It will allow them to reinspect their behavior. This lets other people notice that you are acting professionally instead of being treated poorly.
